THE GOLF COURSE Dinard, in north Brittany, is France's second oldest golf club. It was laid out by returning army officers drawn to neighbouring Saint Malo due to its reputation as a major hub for marine trade. They encouraged the construction of a railway, then a tennis club and finally in 1887…the Willie Dunn designed links over 50 hectares of stunning coastline. As you drive up to the art deco clubhouse, the flat course looks deceptively simple. But Dinard is proper links golf and the course is made all the trickier because no two consecutive holes face the same direction. A little under 6000 yards and with a par of 68, it takes a very good golfer to play to their handicap twice in a row. Dinard provides an excellent game of golf with each hole offering a different challenge. Don't relax when you stand on the tee for the five par threes, four of which are pretty much on the beach. There’s fine food and a charming atmosphere in the clubhouse. It's all very reminiscent of the days of PG Wodehouse.
